Herbert Franklin Jenkins was born on September 6th, 1903 in Hamilton County Chattanooga, Tennessee to parents; Alva Mary Jenkins (Shaw) and Thomas Franklin Jenkins. His brothers were; Thomas Whitman Jenkins, Ira Jenkins, Grady Jenkins and Jewel Jenkins.

Dad worked hard all of his life. He was a laborer and molder at a hot, dusty and dirty foundry for over 30 years. Mom always said of her husband "Herbie" worked hard all of his life - and never, ever asked anyone for anything. When he was being interviewed to enter into the Fraternal Order of the Free and Accepted Masons - they asked him "are you doing this for personal gain"? He looked at the men and said "do these hands look like the hands of a man that ever asked for anything from anybody"? He taught many young men the principles of the Masons. Dad was a Master Mason.

While living in Tennessee, my Dad was a Deacon in the local Baptist Church and a righteous man of God. Mom said that anytime anyone became sick, or needed help that they would call Dad to come over and pray for them. Dad knew the bible and the Holy scriptures better than anyone I've ever known. Things changed after my Dad and Mom moved to Michigan.

The night he died - Dad was watching Mahalia Jackson sing on our old black and white television in 1962 - she was singing an old gospel song "precious Lord lead me home" - Dad sat there - tears streaming down his tired face, he then went to bed and died. He never had a chance to say goodbye. As a little boy, I slept in the same room with my Mom and Dad, because we were poor, and we lived in a small place. I listened closely what I thought was my Dad snoring, was actually my Dad dying from a heart attack. My Mom touched my shoulder and said "son, go in the other room, your Dad is dying". He never made it to a hospital, he was pronounced dead at home. Life was never the same after my Dad died. Our family life that was impoverished and difficult, became more so . . .

Dad passed away at the age of 58 from a myocardial infarction (MI) heart attack. Because he no longer lived for the Lord or attended church, the foundry, smoking cigarettes, alcohol abuse, lack of proper medical care, poverty and hopelessness killed him.

He was the Husband of Essie Belle Jenkins (Franklin) - Father to 7 children - Nina Margaret Jenkins, Frances Lee Jenkins, Bobby Gene Jenkins, Raymond Herbert Jenkins, Shirley Ann Jenkins, Sherry Darlene Jenkins and Matthew Jenkins.

I love and miss you, Dad . . .
