STILWELL – Clara ‘Irene’ Mankiller, 94, was born Sept. 18, 1921, in Titanic, Okla., to Robert Baily Sitton and Pearl Haladay. She passed from this life on Jan. 12, 2016, surrounded by family at her home in Rocky Mountain, Okla.
Irene was blessed with a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed making people laugh. She was thoughtful, kind and generous to all she knew. Her cheerful outlook on life lifted the spirit of so many people around her. Every person she met was special and treated as if she had known them for years. She greeted friends and family with a hug and her beautiful smile. She always made time for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and other family members.
Irene loved spending time outside working in her garden and planting flowers. She also loved baking and canning. She had a passion for sewing, and making beautiful quilts for family. Her quilts were also presented as gifts to many people throughout Oklahoma. She spent her spare time reading. She looked forward to gathering with family for Sunday dinners to spend precious time together and enjoyed playing card games with them.
Irene met President Clinton when he presented her daughter, Wilma Mankiller, with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
She leaves behind her sons, Louis Donald Mankiller and wife Lavena of Mulberry Hollow, and James Ray Mankiller and wife Lula of Keys; 43 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and many other loved ones.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, Robert and Pearl Sitton; the love of her life, husband Charley Mankiller; her children Freida Mankiller Mullins, Robert Mankiller, Francis Mankiller Willingham, John Mankiller, Wilma Mankiller, Linda Mankiller Sanchez, Richard Mankiller, Vanessa Mankiller, and William Mankiller; her brothers, Lyndon Sitton, Millard Sitton, Floyd Sitton, and Roy Sitton; sisters, Lillilan Lanham and Sadie Starr; and grandchildren, Laura Rackliff, Virgil ‘Butch’ Williamson and Smokey Mankiller.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 15, 2016, at 10 a.m. in the Echota Baptist Church, Stilwell, with Brother Gary Leach officiating. Interment to follow at Echota Cemetery under the direction of Roberts/Reed-Culver Funeral Home.
