In the 1840s, there was an epidemic in White County which may have killed Melvina's parents. Back then, orphans would be taken in either by relatives or simply neighbors.
Melvina's death certificate says she died on Dec. 24, 1918 and is buried in Grassy Cove. It also says that her mother's maiden name was Flynn. Melvina's daughter, Margaret Ann DeRossett Bristow, was the Informant for the death certificate and in the block for Name of the Deceased's Father, she wrote: "I never heard her say, as she was raised by others."
