Ethel was the eldest daughter of Joseph Kurtz Conwell and Hannah Belinda Boyd. Her middle name was given for her grandmother, Eliza Vail Markee Boyd. She graduated from Scio, O., H.S. in 1902 while living with her Boyd grandparents. She worked as an office manager for several firms in Cleveland and Cincinnati, and married at Niagara Falls in 1911 to Lewis George Phippen, who was divorced. Ethel and Lew had one daugther, Janet and eventually they separated. Ethel retired to Florida where she died after an emergency surgery.
