Joe was a son of Jeremiah Davidson Conwell and Christina Carruthers. (His middle name, "Kurtz," was for an uncle-by-marriage.). He was born in a log cabin on land deeded by President Andrew Jackson. He moved to Kansas in 1870 and soon returned to Ohio. Several years later, he headed back to Kansas to file a homestead claim with his cousin, Rex Kurtz Conwell, with whom he was in a mercantile business at Tippecanoe, Harrison Co., Ohio, in about 1879. However, the woman he loved wouldn't leave her family in Ohio, so Joe returned to Tuscarawas Co. and married Belinda Boyd in 1881. He was a farmer, insurance salesman for Ohio Farmer's Insurance, & farm implement dealer at Stillwater. He retired to Uhrichsville, Ohio, in 1920 and died at the home of his daughter, Mid Hutson, at Roanoke - just north of Uhrichsville - after several strokes. Joe was the father of nine children.
