Died aged 84 yrs 4 mo 11 days.

Son of Rev. Dr. William Hooker Smith, Revolutionary War Surgeon and Presbyterian minister, and Sarah (Brown/Browne) Smith.

James served in the Revolutionary War out of Forty Fort just after the massacre at the Battle of Wyoming.

He married Deborah Reynolds who died near Wilkes-Barre, PA. Their children were born at Laceyville, Wyoming Co. PA.

About 1800 he and 3 sons went to Schuyler Co. NY and cleared a spot on Cayuta Lake in the Town of Catherine. He later bought a farm 2 miles north of Cayuta Lake and built a house still standing in 1936. The valley is still known as Smith Valley.

James' second wife was Ruth Hoffman.
