Wife of John Barker. An error in Bradsby's 1893 History of Luzerne County, PA was copied by author Edward Hooker in his Descendants of Rev. Thomas Hooker, Hartford, Connecticut, 1586-1908, as "A daughter, Mary, married Mr. Baker, of New York city; ...". Unfortunately, the incorrect Baker lineage is being supported without consulting primary source documentation to verify these unsourced regional and family histories. Twenty two years prior to Bradsby's History of Luzerne, Charles W. Baird in his Chronicle of a Border Town, History Of Rye, NY, Westchester County, New York wrote re. William Hooker Smith that "He had a daughter Mary, who married John Barker." Della Smith Bishop in her Smith-Hooker Genealogy (Ithaca, NY: Stuart & Son, 1936) finally gets this right. However, it is important to note that Rev. Dr. William Hooker Smith's own 1815 will mentions "The children of John Barker of Secordsdale in the county of Westchester & State of New York." This Mary Barker, wife of John, died in 1783, therefore it was important for William Hooker Smith to remember his grandchildren.. Even with the "John Baker went to New York City" comment from Bradsby, "John Barker of Westchester" was sued in Harlem. Further, the "Smith" surname is found in descendants of John and Mary Smith Barker. This Mary Barker memorial deserves to be linked to her parents.
