He attended Red Willow County Rural Grade School District 8, Lebanon Grade School and graduated from Lebanon High School in 1940. After high school he served in the U.S. Navy during W.W. II.
Harold and Barbara Van Vleet were married June 13, 1944, at her sister's home in Orberlin, Kansas. After Harold returned from the service in November of 1945, they made their home on farms in Decatur County until 1966. Harold and Barbara moved to Oberlin in 1966 and he worked at the trailer factory until 1968, Don's Super Market until 1978, Corcoran-Bateman Funeral Home, part-time at Reliance Motor Co. and Enfield Memorial Chapel.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Oberlin, Kansas, Oberlin Lions Club, Mountain Slope Lodge No. 186 A.F. & A.M., McCook P.P.O.E. Lodge No. 1434 and Oberlin American Legion Post No. 70. His family, his friends and gardening were of great interest to him.
Survivors include: his wife, Barbara Castor of Oberlin; one daughter and her husband, Ronda and Bob Haskins of Broomfield, Colorado; one granddaughter, Alison Haskins of Broomfield, Colorado; three brothers and their wives, Floyd and Marcilla Castor of Tampa, Florida, Francis and Kathryn Castor of Eudora, Kansas, and Perry and Dorothy Castor of Klamath Falls, Oregon; one sister, Mrs. Marie Dearsmith of Concordia, Kansas; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Barba Castor.
