Don served with the famed 2nd Battalion of the Marines that saw heavy action in Guadalcanal and Tarawa. He was hospitalized for about 3 weeks in the Pacific theater for burns received on his chest and arm. He was awarded the Silver Star and 2 presidential unit citations. He was a sergeant at time of discharge, after serving 28 months overseas.

Donald Borre Dies in Ilinois--

Donald S. Borre, a former Wolbach resident, died March 5 at Hines, Illinois. Funeral services were held at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Wolbach on Thursday March 8 at 11 AM. The Rev. Elwood Hipple officiated.

Mrs. Larry Steenson and Mrs. Victor Grossart sang, "Just a Closer Walk With Thee" and "Take My Hand Precious Lord" accompanied by the organist, Mrs. William Paulman, Jr.
Casketbearers were Virgil Berney, Jr. William Berney, Scott Berney, Larry Fiese, Richard Fiese and Edward Cizek. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery at Wolbach with Masonic Rites by St. Paul Lodge No. 82 A.F. & A.M.

Donald S. Borre, son of William and Hazel Stratton Borre, was born on a farm near Cushing, Nebraska on May 22, 1922. He entered into rest on March 5, at Hines, Illinois at the age of 61 years.

Donald received his education at Cushing and graduated from the Wolbach High School. Donald grew to manhood in the Wolbach area. He served in the US Marine Corps from January of 1942 to September of 1945 during World War II. After his discharge, Donald returned to Wolbach for four years, then moved to Omaha where he was employed by the Continental Trailways.

On July 3, 1950, Donald was united in marriage to Shirley Knudsen at Omaha. The couple made their home in Omaha until 1962 when they moved to Chicago where Donald was a regional manager for the Continental Trailways. He retired from Continental in October of 1978.

He was a member of the Lutheran Church of Omaha; the fraternal organization of Moose and Eagles of Hanover, Illinois; a member of the John J. Mercer Masonic Lodge No 290 in Benson and the Tehama Shrine of Omaha.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley of Hanover Park, Illinois; five sisters, Mrs. Leland (Doris) Berney of San Gabriel, California, Mrs. Kermit (Lorraine) Moffett of Vista, California, Mrs. C. H. (Billie) Fiese of Gothenburg, Mrs. Virgil (Jeane) Berney of Palmer and Mrs. George (JoAnn) Kamper of Grand Island; and one brother, Wayne Borre of Omaha.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mrs. Hurley (Vivian) Moffett and Mrs. Ronald (Wanda) Nelson.
