BODY RECOVERED IN HOUR SEARCH; CRAMPS BLAMED
Eugene Baus, 16, St. Cloud, Is Stricken at Wolf Lake Sunday
MANY SEE ACCIDENT
Diving from a boat in which he was riding with, two companions, Eugene, 16-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Valentine Baus, St. Cloud, was drowned in Wolf Lake in the Town of Marshfield, Sunday afternoon.
The body was recovered at 4:40 p.m. by August Wolff, an hour after the youth took his fatal plunge. Chief James Russell, Jr., of the Fond du Lac fire department, Sheriff A.A. Briggs and their assistants attempted to revive the youth with a pulmotor but the effort was futile.
The body was found by Wolff in seven feet of water after several other swimmers had search the bottom of the lake.
Young Baus, with Alexander Wehner and Gilbert Helz, 15, both of St. Cloud left the Baus residence shortly after noon Sunday, driving to Wolf Lake. They rented a boat at the lake, put on swimming suits and rowed out into the lake. Young Baus was the first to stand up in the boat and dive into the water. He never came to the surface.
Scores of persons witnessed the dive and when Baus did not reappear a general alarm was sounded. Hooks were used and swimmers dove into the lake at the spot where the youth went down. After an hour's search the body was located. In the meantime the fire department pulmotor had been summoned.
Resorters at the lake were unable to account for the drowning, but it is believed that young Baus was very warm and the shock of the cool water either resulted in a cramp or in heart failure.
The brothers and sisters of the youth had gone to Calumet Harbor for a picnic, unaware of the tragic accident until they returned home early Sunday evening.
Eugene Baus was born in St. Cloud on Sept. 23, 1908. He attended St. Norbert's college, In DePere. He is survived by his parents, two sisters, Mrs. William Kleist of Campbellsport and Mrs. Frank Bartel of St. Cloud, and four brothers, Benjamin (sic: Benedict), Ervin, Alfred and Valentine Jr., all of St. Cloud.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 9:45 o'clock from the family residence and at 10 o'clock from St. Claudius church. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.

Family Return From Picnic Party to Find Corpse
Eugene Baus, 16-year-old son of Valentine Baus, retired merchant at St. Cloud, was drowned in Wolf Lake Sunday afternoon at 3:45 o'clock. The body was recovered two hours later by August Wolf, of St. Cloud.
The youth with two companions, Alexander Wehner and Gilbert Helz, both of St. Cloud, left that village at 3 o'clock, to motor to Wolf Lake to take a dip. At the lake they secured a boat and after rowing out from the Wolf Lake resort about two hundred feet in the lake, the Baus boy dove from the boat.
When he did not return to the surface, his companions became panic stricken and started to shout for help. Several boats put out to attempt a rescue, but efforts to locate the body of the youth proved futile until August Wolf, who was one of those engaged in the search, chanced to step upon the body as he was walking in five feet of water at the spot, where the boy had disappeared.
…lifted the body, and aided in placing it in a boat. Wolf said that at the place where the body was found, there was a heavy tangle of weeds.
The body was taken to shore and efforts at resuscitation made. A call had been sent to the fire department here for a pulmotor, and Chief James Russell made a record run with the instrument to the scene. For nearly an hour the chief worked the apparatus but without avail. A doctor summoned from Marytown, and another from Calumetville, arrived shortly after the body was taken from the lake and declared the boy was beyond any aid.
The doctors expressed the opinion that the sudden plunge into the lake when the boy was in an overheated condition may have caused heart failure. Another theory is that he dove into the weeds and was caught fast and drowned. The body was removed to the home of the parents at St. Cloud by a St. Cloud undertaker.
A sad feature of the untimely death of the young man, was that his mother, father, brothers and sisters, did not know of his death until after 7 o'clock in the evening, when they returned from Calumet Harbor where they had been picnicking during the day. The picnic was in the nature of a family reunion, the married daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Baus being present with their husbands and families.
Eugene and a younger brother had not gone on the picnic, and it was not until the family returned home, and found the dead body of their son in the house, that they learned of the tragedy.
The victim of the drowning graduated from the parochial school at St. Cloud, and was a student at St. Norbert's college at DePere. He was planning to leave for Kansas City in a few days to enter the Sweeney school of automobile engineering.
Eugene Baus would have been 17 years of age on September 23. Besides his parents he leaves two sisters, Mrs. William Kleist, of Campbellsport, and Mrs. Frank Bartell, of St. Cloud, and four brothers, Benjamin (sic: Benedict) M. Baus of St. Cloud. Irving Baus of Milwaukee and Alfred and Valentine Jr. of St. Cloud.
Sheriff A.A. Briggs was notified of the drowning when he was at Mt. Calvary looking into an auto theft case and hurried at once to Wolf Lake. He arrived there just at the time the body was located and assisted in efforts to resuscitate the boy.
The funeral will be held Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock from the St. Claudius church, Rev. Stephen Zohlen with several assisting priests to conduct a solemn requiem mass. Burial will take place in the adjoining cemetery.

Services for Eugene Baus to be Held at St. Cloud
The funeral of Eugene Baus, 16-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Valentine Baus, of St. Cloud, who drowned Sunday afternoon at Wolf Lake, will be held at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning at St. Claudius church, St. Cloud, Rev. S. Zohlen officiating. The bearers will be classmates of the deceased, namely Norman Wehner, Zeno Lisowe, Aloysius Michels, Clemons Ditter, Roman Baus and Leo Klinzing. Six cousins will act as honorary bearers and Gilbert Hess will be the cross bearer.
Physicians who were called to attend the young man immediately following the accident, declare that death in all probability was caused by heart failure. They found no water in the young man's lungs.

St. Cloud Victim of Wolf Lake Is Buried From St. Claudius' Church.
MORE THAN 800 PRESENT
More than 800 people attended the funeral of Eugene Baus, 16-year-old St. Cloud boy, who was drowned in Wolf lake Sunday afternoon, held this morning. Services were held from St. Claudius' church at 10 a.m. The Rev. Frs. Sippel, Zohlen and Theodore, the latter a Capuchin monk from Mt. Calvary, had charge. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
The bearers were: Roman Baus, Leo Klinzing, Zeno Lisowe, Norman Wehner, Raymond Ditter and Aloysius Michels, Gilbert Helz, who was with Eugene at the time of his death, acted as cross bearer. The honorary bears were John, Michael and Benjamin (sic: Benedict) Faber, Clifford Schrage, Carl and Leo Baus.
The Misses Lucile, Rosemary and Florence Kleist and Agnes Baus acted as flower girls. The floral tribute was unusually large and beautiful.

WOLF LAKE CLAIMS ST. CLOUD YOUTH
Eugene Baus, 17-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Val Baus, St. Cloud, was drowned at about 4:30 Sunday afternoon at Wolf lake, while in swimming with Hubert Helz and Alexander Wehner, two other St. Cloud youths.
The tragedy occurred in six feet of water. Baus, diving over the edge of the boat in which the party was riding, apparently became entangled in the weeds and was unable to extricate himself.
Thomas Ott and August Wolf, also from St. Cloud, came to attempt a rescue, but Baus was beyond help before he was taken from the water.

Diving from a boat in which he was riding with, two companions, Eugene, 16-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Valentine Baus, St. Cloud, was drowned in Wolf Lake in the Town of Marshfield, Sunday afternoon.
The body was recovered at 4:40 p.m. by August Wolff, an hour after the youth took his fatal plunge. Chief James Russell, Jr., of the Fond du Lac fire department, Sheriff A.A. Briggs and their assistants attempted to revive the youth with a pulmotor but the effort was futile.
The body was found by Wolff in seven feet of water after several other swimmers had search the bottom of the lake.
Young Baus, with Alexander Wehner and Gilbert Helz, 15, both of St. Cloud left the Baus residence shortly after noon Sunday, driving to Wolf Lake. They rented a boat at the lake, put on swimming suits and rowed out into the lake. Young Baus was the first to stand up in the boat and dive into the water. He never came to the surface.
Scores of persons witnessed the dive and when Baus did not reappear a general alarm was sounded. Hooks were used and swimmers dove into the lake at the spot where the youth went down. After an hour's search the body was located. In the meantime the fire department pulmotor had been summoned.
Resorters at the lake were unable to account for the drowning, but it is believed that young Baus was very warm and the shock of the cool water either resulted in a cramp or in heart failure.
The brothers and sisters of the youth had gone to Calumet Harbor for a picnic, unaware of the tragic accident until they returned home early Sunday evening.
Eugene Baus was born in St. Cloud on Sept. 23, 1908. He attended St. Norbert's college, In DePere. He is survived by his parents, two sisters, Mrs. William Kleist of Campbellsport and Mrs. Frank Bartel of St. Cloud, and four brothers, Benjamin (sic: Benedict), Ervin, Alfred and Valentine Jr., all of St. Cloud.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 9:45 o'clock from the family residence and at 10 o'clock from St. Claudius church. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.

Family Return From Picnic Party to Find Corpse
Eugene Baus, 16-year-old son of Valentine Baus, retired merchant at St. Cloud, was drowned in Wolf Lake Sunday afternoon at 3:45 o'clock. The body was recovered two hours later by August Wolf, of St. Cloud.
The youth with two companions, Alexander Wehner and Gilbert Helz, both of St. Cloud, left that village at 3 o'clock, to motor to Wolf Lake to take a dip. At the lake they secured a boat and after rowing out from the Wolf Lake resort about two hundred feet in the lake, the Baus boy dove from the boat.
When he did not return to the surface, his companions became panic stricken and started to shout for help. Several boats put out to attempt a rescue, but efforts to locate the body of the youth proved futile until August Wolf, who was one of those engaged in the search, chanced to step upon the body as he was walking in five feet of water at the spot, where the boy had disappeared.
…lifted the body, and aided in placing it in a boat. Wolf said that at the place where the body was found, there was a heavy tangle of weeds.
The body was taken to shore and efforts at resuscitation made. A call had been sent to the fire department here for a pulmotor, and Chief James Russell made a record run with the instrument to the scene. For nearly an hour the chief worked the apparatus but without avail. A doctor summoned from Marytown, and another from Calumetville, arrived shortly after the body was taken from the lake and declared the boy was beyond any aid.
The doctors expressed the opinion that the sudden plunge into the lake when the boy was in an overheated condition may have caused heart failure. Another theory is that he dove into the weeds and was caught fast and drowned. The body was removed to the home of the parents at St. Cloud by a St. Cloud undertaker.
A sad feature of the untimely death of the young man, was that his mother, father, brothers and sisters, did not know of his death until after 7 o'clock in the evening, when they returned from Calumet Harbor where they had been picnicking during the day. The picnic was in the nature of a family reunion, the married daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Baus being present with their husbands and families.
Eugene and a younger brother had not gone on the picnic, and it was not until the family returned home, and found the dead body of their son in the house, that they learned of the tragedy.
The victim of the drowning graduated from the parochial school at St. Cloud, and was a student at St. Norbert's college at DePere. He was planning to leave for Kansas City in a few days to enter the Sweeney school of automobile engineering.
Eugene Baus would have been 17 years of age on September 23. Besides his parents he leaves two sisters, Mrs. William Kleist, of Campbellsport, and Mrs. Frank Bartell, of St. Cloud, and four brothers, Benjamin (sic: Benedict) M. Baus of St. Cloud. Irving Baus of Milwaukee and Alfred and Valentine Jr. of St. Cloud.
Sheriff A.A. Briggs was notified of the drowning when he was at Mt. Calvary looking into an auto theft case and hurried at once to Wolf Lake. He arrived there just at the time the body was located and assisted in efforts to resuscitate the boy.
The funeral will be held Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock from the St. Claudius church, Rev. Stephen Zohlen with several assisting priests to conduct a solemn requiem mass. Burial will take place in the adjoining cemetery.

S. Zohlen officiating. The bearers will be classmates of the deceased, namely Norman Wehner, Zeno Lisowe, Aloysius Michels, Clemons Ditter, Roman Baus and Leo Klinzing. Six cousins will act as honorary bearers and Gilbert Hess will be the cross bearer.
Physicians who were called to attend the young man immediately following the accident, declare that death in all probability was caused by heart failure. They found no water in the young man's lungs.

More than 800 people attended the funeral of Eugene Baus, 16-year-old St. Cloud boy, who was drowned in Wolf lake Sunday afternoon, held this morning. Services were held from St. Claudius' church at 10 a.m. The Rev. Frs. Sippel, Zohlen and Theodore, the latter a Capuchin monk from Mt. Calvary, had charge. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
The bearers were: Roman Baus, Leo Klinzing, Zeno Lisowe, Norman Wehner, Raymond Ditter and Aloysius Michels, Gilbert Helz, who was with Eugene at the time of his death, acted as cross bearer. The honorary bears were John, Michael and Benjamin (sic: Benedict) Faber, Clifford Schrage, Carl and Leo Baus.
The Misses Lucile, Rosemary and Florence Kleist and Agnes Baus acted as flower girls. The floral tribute was unusually large and beautiful.

The tragedy occurred in six feet of water. Baus, diving over the edge of the boat in which the party was riding, apparently became entangled in the weeds and was unable to extricate himself.
Thomas Ott and August Wolf, also from St. Cloud, came to attempt a rescue, but Baus was beyond help before he was taken from the water.
