William Dale "Bill" Dowell, 59, of Lafayette, an employee of Fairfield Mfg Co, died at 9:15 PM Thursday in St. Elizabeth Hospital. He had been in ill health since June 18 and hospitalized this time for two days.

Born Dec. 10, 1922, in Tippecanoe Co, he was the son of the late Claude and Ada Thompson Dowell. He was raised on a farm in Gilboa Township, Benton County, near Remington, and was a 1940 graduate of Gilboa High School. He briefly attended Indiana University, but that was long enough to make him a devoted fan! He had lived in Lafayette since his marriage on May 27, 1950, to Eloise French, an employee of the Tippecanoe County Recorder's Office.

Mr. Dowell had been employed as as a grinder at Fairfield Mfg Co for 31 years. He attended Chirst United Methodist Church and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 347 and Fairfield Athletic Association. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and had hunted as a youth. As well as being a die-hard IU fan, he was also a fan of the Indy 500. He passed his interest in Civil War history on to his oldest daughter.

Surviving with his wife are four daughters, Vonda J. Dowell, Mrs. Michael (Karen) Eastridge, Mrs. Timothy (Beverly) Minniear, and Mrs. Michael (Mary) Corbin, all of Lafayette; one sister, Mrs. Wayne (Lois) Cooper of Goodland; and two brothers, Robert S. Dowell of Lafayette and Paul L. Dowell of Remington. Also surviving are six grand-children: David William Eastridge, Daniel Joseph Eastridge, Brian Walker Minniear, Lindsay Renay Minniear, Kelsey Lynn Minniear and Rebekah Courtney Corbin.** Preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Erman, and an infant sister, Betty Jane. Those desiring may contribute in memoriam to the Heart Association or American Cancer Society.
