Leo Baer was the 11th child of Sebastian Baer and Anna Schilling. He was born in Karlsruhe, Russia, which is now part of the Ukraine. He moved with his family to the US when he was 18 months old. He married Theresa Schmitt on November 4, 1913. They had 14 children, 3 of which were triplets, and 4 died in infancy. Leo and Theresa lived most of their married life in Ipswich, SD. Leo loved music and learned to play the French horn. Times were tough and he worked several jobs: blacksmith, mechanic, and working for the Works Progress Administration as part of Roosevelt's "New Deal". Later he bought a truck and went into the hauling business. Leo deeply loved his wife Theresa and often called her Trace. Leo loved to come home after work and let his children unlace his boots and set on his lap and comb his hair. After the death of his beloved Trace, Leo married Marie Sindelar Morgan on Aug 10, 1964.
