He was born June 11, 1911, in Germantown Township, Cottonwood County, to Gustav and Amelia (Nickel) Pankonin. On June 14, 1934, he married Esther Hohman at Zion Lutheran Church in Sanborn. Marvin was a lifetime resident of the Sanborn area and farmed in Germantown Township for over 50 years. In 1987 he retired and moved into Sanborn. Marvin was a lifetime member of Red Rock United Methodist Church, former Sunday school superintendent, teacher, and trustee, served on various church boards and was a member of the Men's Chorus. He served as a Germantown Township Clerk for 31 years, served on the Sanborn Farmers Elevator Board for 20 years - 18 years as chairman, and served on the Sanborn State Bank Board for 10 years. Marvin enjoyed farming, fishing, looking over the crops, visiting with friends and his family. Marvin and Esther were planning to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary in June.
Surviving Marvin is his wife Esther of Sanborn; daughter-in-law- Sharon Pankonin of Sanborn; grandchildren- Randy and wife Kelly Pankonin of Sanborn, Jeff, and wife Michelle Pankonin of Sanborn, Sue, and husband Jeff Rosenstengel of Springfield, Shelly Pankonin of Sanborn; three great-grandchildren - Steffani, Kelsey, and Tyler; two step-great-grandchildren - Wendy and Stacy; sister - Esther Senst of Pipestone; brother - LuVerne and wife Juanita Pankonin of Brookings, South Dakota. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Darrell in 1993, sister Clara Karow, brothers Elmer, Walter, and Arthur Pankonin.
Funeral service held Saturday, June 4, 1994, - 10:30 a.m. at the Red Rock United Methodist Church, Germantown Township, Cottonwood County. The Reverend Mark Bengston officiated. Mrs. Janis Nickel, organist. The Men's Chorus and Mrs. Nora Benston were vocalists. Casketbearers: Gary Gode, Kenneth Clark, Dennis Senst, David Pankonin, Warren Pankonin, and Wayne Pankonin. --Services by Sturm Funeral Home, Springfield.
