Arthur William Pankonin, age 92 of rural Sanborn, died Friday, February 12, 1993 at St. John's Lutheran Home in Springfield where he had been a resident since August 1991. He had gangrene in his feet.
Art was born April 15, 1900 in Cottonwood County to Gustav and Amelia (Nickel) Pankonin. On October 5, 1920, he married Amanda Karow in a triple-ring ceremony at the home of his parents in Germantown Township with Clara Pankonin and Willie Karow and Rudolph Martius and Elsie Karow. Art and Amanda lived their entire married life on the same farm four miles southwest of Sanborn. Art was a lifetime member of the Germantown United Methodist Church, former church council member having held many of the board positions through the years, a long term member and treasurer for District #29 School Board, and former member and treasurer for the Germantown Township board. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, fixing engines and motors and visiting with his family and friends.
Surviving Art are his wife- Amanda of Sanborn; son- Raymond of Sanborn; grandchildren- Kelly Pankonin of San Diego, CA., and Patti and husband Kenneth Sell of Sanborn; step grandchildren- Eugene and wife Cheryl Brown of St. James, Kevin and wife Vicki Brown of Sanborn, Alan and wife Roselle Brown of Gilbert, MN., Donna and husband John Bonham , and Mary Jean and husband Dale Fennern all of Sanborn; 17 step great grandchildren, 1 step great great grandson, a sister- Esther Senst of Pipestone, MN., and brothers- Marvin and wife Esther Pankonin of Sanborn and LuVerne and wife Juanita Pankonin of Brookings, S.D. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Glenard G. Pankonin at age 21, a daughter-in-law Jean Pankonin in 1990, a sister Clara Pankonin Karow and brothers Elmer and Walter Pankonin.
