Gustav Adolph Pankonin, son of Ludwig and Bertha Pankonin, was born in Germany on August 17, 1875. At the age of five, he came, with his parents, to the United States settling at Dodge Center, Minnesota. When he was 14, the family moved to the Red Rock community and he made his home here and in Jeffers for the remainder of his life.
On June 22, 1899, he was united in marriage to Amelia Sarah Nickel at the Red Rock church. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Pankonin lived on the Grandfather Pankonin farm where Kenneth Pankonin now lives. On July 4, 1902, they moved onto their own farm, now occupied by the Walter Pankonin family. In 1936 they moved one mile east of the old homestead, the present home of the Luverne Pankonin family. They lived there for nine years and then purchased their residence in Jeffers where they have since made their home. In June 1949 they celebrated their golden wedding.
Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Pankonin, namely: Arthur, Elmer, Esther (Mrs. Clarence Senst), Marvin, Walter, LuVerne, and Clara (Mrs. Willie Karow). Clara passed away in 1933, leaving a little girl, Doris (now Mrs. Rollin Johnson), who made her home with her grandparents for eight years. They also cared for a niece, Rose Prodehl, for almost a year.
Mr. Pankonin farmed in the Red Rock area for 46 years and then retired to his home in Jeffers. He took to an active interest in his church and community affairs. He was a member of the Red Rock Evangelical United Brethren Church. He served as a trustee of the church and was also a Sunday school teacher for many years. He was a member of the township board and had also been an assessor. His hobbies were fishing and hunting and he had spent many happy hours following these sports.
Mr. Pankonin's health had not been too good for the past few years, but he had been able to be up and around most of the time. A week ago Saturday he suffered a heart attack and was taken to the Windom Hospital for care. He seemed to rally from this, but on Sunday he suffered a second attack which resulted in his death at 7:05 that evening. Death was due to a heart ailment and other complications. He had reached the age of 76 years, nine months, and one day.
Besides his wife and six children, he leaves to mourn his death, three brothers, Charles and Emil of Jeffers and Fred of Minneapolis; four sisters Louise (Mrs. August Nickel) of Springfield, Helena (Mrs. Fred Kierce) of Minneapolis, Amelia (Mrs. Fred Pooch) of Lamberton, and Hannah (Mrs. Isaac Foth) of Windom; also 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters Selma (Mrs. Fred Vollmer), Martha (Mrs. Ed Missling), and Bertha (Mrs. Charles Schwanke), and one grandson, Glen-.....
