He was born at St. Joe, Wis., on Sept. 19, 1856. He was married to Miss Gertrude Dietzen at Mt. Calvary, and she preceded him in death 12 years ago. Three children also died, Matthew in 1906, Clara in 1909, and Mrs. Peter Weber (Elizabeth) in 1937.
Surviving are one son, Joseph, with whom Mr. Steffes had been living for one year; three daughters, Mrs. Peter Brandt, Mrs. Alvis Brandt, both of St. Ann, and Mrs. Julia Buechel, of Sheboygan; 11 grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
Funeral services were at the Brandt home and at St. Ann Church. The Rev. Clemence P. Kern officiated and burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
