Martha was the d/o John Giffin and Margaret Jane Shaw. She was born in Ohio Co., WV. She migrated with her family to Lee's Summit, MO., in 1869. She married Samuel Shumaker in 1898. Samuel died in Baldwin, KS and may also be buried here. He was a Civil War veteran. She was an advisor to many Baker University young people who boarded in her home.

In her later years Jennie moved to Berea, KY. The name on her KY death record was transcribed as Lennie Shumaker. My Giffin history book documents her burial at Baldwin, KS.

A Roscoe R. Giffin, from CO, also moved to Berea, KY and taught at the Berea University.
