Named after her mother, Ernestina was the fifth of fourteen children born to Ernestine Wilhelmine (Schultz) and Carl Friedrich Belling. She was only 3 months old when her parents and four older siblings arrived from Germany on April 15, 1883, part of the massive Lutheran migration. They landed in Baltimore and made their way to Appleton where the family settled. On October 24, 1905 she married a Catholic, Thomas James Murphy. Together they raised eight children: Clara B., Walter J., Ralph Herman, Thomas Charles, Ruth Marie, Estella Emma, Jack and Richard.
