Emil was the 8th of fourteen children born to Ernestine Wilhelmine Friedricke (Schultz) and Karl Friedrich August Belling. On November 4, 1914 he married Meta S. Holz. Sadly, Meta became pregnant 7 times but lost all babies but one, Doris Elsie born in 1919.

After Meta died in 1957, Emil married Hattie B. (Glaser) Anklam, a widow and close family friend. Emil and Hattie were together for many years until Emil died in 1973.

Emil is buried with his first wife, Meta, while Hattie was buried with her first husband, Paul R. Anklam.
