Louise was born to Russian immigrants David and Maria Katrina "Kate" Kisling Schwabauer who met in America and married in 1880. She finished the 8th grade at a country school in Thayer County, Nebraska and, at age 16, married William Bartels. They farmed in the area for about six years, where their first three children were born: Albert, Henry, and Richard. They then moved to Lyman County, South Dakota in 1903; there, their daughters Elsie and Alma were born. Louise lived for almost thirty years after her husband passed away.

Mrs. Bartels

PIERRE--Funeral service for Mrs. Louise Bartels, 92, who died Sunday at Mary House, was to be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Mary House Chapel with the Rev. Philip Schuster officiating. Burial was to be in Scotty Philips Cemetery.
She was born in Friend Neb., on Nov. 24, 1880 to David and Kate Schwabauer. She married William Bartels on Nov. 4, 1896. They homesteaded south of Ft. Pierre in 1903 where they lived since. She lived in Mary House the last six years.
Mrs. Bartels is survived by a son Albert, Pierre; a daughter, Mrs. Don (Alma) Van Ness; a sister, Mrs. Bertha Nielson, Woonsocket; two brother, William, Wessington Springs, and Herbert, Arcadia, Calif.; 15 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
Funeral arrangements were announced by Thompson-Isburg Funeral Home.
