Alma Van Ness
PIERRE--Alma Van Ness, Pierre, died Thursday April 11, 2002 at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre.
Survivors include two daughters, Lila Laham, Wichita, Kan. and Carol Elsenbraun, Tucson Ariz.; five grandchildren and five great grandchidlren.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service, today at Isburg-Hofmeister Funeral Chapel in Pierre. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday April 16 to Fort Pierre United Church of Christ. Burial will be at Scott Philip [sic] Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for Fort Pierre Congregational United Church of Christ.

Alma was the fifth of five children born to Wilhelm "William" Henry and Louise (Schwabauer) Bartels who had come to Lyman County, South Dakota from Thayer County, Nebraska in 1903. Alma's grandparents were German immigrants from Meerbeck, Germany: Henry and Marie Bartels.
Alma's older siblings were Albert Henry (1898-1985), Henry George (1900-1957), Richard John William (1902-1941), and Elsie Anna (1905-1970) who married Henry Gerhard August Ehlers, Jr.
Alma grew up in Lyman County (Rowe Township); on 5 May 1928 she married Donald Marion Van Ness at Fort Pierre (Stanley County), South Dakota. They lived their married lives in or near Fort Pierre; Donald died in 1986.
She lived for a time with her daughter Carol in Tucson, but returned to live out her life in the Pierre area.

Side note: Alma was interested in her family history, and provided the link to her grandfather Henry, who was a brother to our ancestor Fred Bartels of Nebraska.
