William was the first of his family to be born in America. His parents, Ernst Henry Bartels and Engle Marie Krömer, had emigrated from Meerbeck in the Schaumburt-Lippe area of Lower Saxony Germany on 23 Mar 1870, following Henry's brother (Fred)'s lead. They settled in the German colony in Will County, near Crete Illinois, and farmed there for a few years. In the 1880's, William, his parents, and his siblings (Fred, Lena, Minna, and Henry) emigrated to the Saline county area south of Tobias, where William's Uncle Fred had already taken claim to land.

William married Louisa Schwabauer who lived nearby on 4 Nov 1896 at Gilead in Thayer County, Nebraska and settled down to farm in Thayer county. Their sons were born there: Albert Henry, Henry George, and Richard John William. In 1903 William moved his family to Lyman County, South Dakota to homestead south of Ft. Pierre, and there their daughters were born: Elsie and Alma.
