Richard John William Bartels was the third of five children born to William and Louise (Schwabauer) Bartels while they were living in Nebraska. His grandparents had immigrated to America from Meerbeck, Germany in 1870, following the lead of his grandfather's brother, Fred Bartels. His parents moved to Lyman County, South Dakota when he was just a little baby, and this is where he was educated through the 8th grade.

On 14 Dec 1933, in Davison County, he married Myrtle Louise Weverstad, whose parents had come to Lyman county from Wisconsin. To this union were born two childeren: Jim and Connie.

He suffered a lengthy illness before being called Home. His son took over the ranching operation some time after his death.
