Albert Bartels was the oldest of five children born to William and Louise (Schwabauer) Bartels. His father's parents had immigrated to America from Germany, first to Illinois and then to Nebraska. In 1903 Albert's father moved his family from Thayer County, Nebraska to Lyman County, South Dakota, south of Fort Pierre. Albert and his two brothers (Henry and Richard) were born in Nebraska and his two sisters (Elsie and Alma) were born in South Dakota.

On June 24, 1920, in Pierre, South Dakota, Albert married Erma Binkley whose parents had moved to the area from Iowa. Albert and Erma had three children: Ruth, William (named for Albert's father), and Betty Jean.

Albert and his brother William farmed adjoining properties in Lyman County. When he retired, he moved to Pierre, where he died in 1985. Surviving him were his wife and children and his sister Alma, as well as at least two grandchildren (Betty's daughters, Danna and Debra).
