Lawrence A. Chiswell, Supervisor of Assessments for Montgomery county and well-known citizen of that county, died at his home near Barnesville, Sunday morning at 4:30 o'clock after an illness of three months, aged 68 years.
Mr. Chiswell was born, near Dickerson, on April 12, 1869, a son of Mrs. Evelyn A. Chiswell and the late Edward Chiswell.
For a number of years he engaged in the mercantile business in Dickerson and in 1919 was elected to the Board of County Commissioners of Montgomery county on the Democratic ticket. He served on the board for three years and in 1922 was appointed to the position of Supervisor of Assessments by the late Governor Albert C. Ritchie. He had filled the office continuously since his appointment. Mr Chiswell was a member of the Poolesville Presbyterian church and an elder of the church.
He married Miss Hattie Hershberger, of near Poolesville, who survives in addition to his mother, Mrs. Evelyn A. Chiswell, near Dickerson. Three children, Maurice Chiswell, Gaithersburg; Mrs. Newton Brewer, Hagerstown; and Mrs. William B. Hilton, Barnesville; and the following brothers and sisters also survive: Mrs. Joseph Darby, Dawsonville; Mrs Norman Wootton, Silver Springs; Thomas Chiswell, Silver Spring; Edward L. Chiswell, Dickerson;
and Captain Maurice Chiswell, Silver Spring.
Funeral will be he'.d Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock from his late home. Interment in Monocacy cemetery, Beallsville, William B Hilton, funeral director.
