Thomas Jefferson, known as Jeff, was the son of William Dudley & Mary Arminta (Owens) Smith. He was the second of their 13 children.

He was married to Sarah Louisa Trout (daughter of Jeremiah & Mary (Ewing) Trout) in Scotland Co, MO, by E.C. Browning, a Minister of the Gospel, on October 16, 1870.

Their children were: Vivian Rowena, Otto, Curtis Erwin, Jennie Lelia, Alpha, & William Carlton.

Thomas died in Oakland, CA, on November 13, 1918, from Chronic Interstitial Nephritis.

A notice of his death was published in the Oakland Enquirer on Nov. 14, 1918:
"SMITH - In Oakland, November 13, 1918. Thomas J., beloved husband of Sarah L. Smith of San Francisco, and father of Mrs. Arthur Alsop of Bellingham, Wash., O.B. and Dr. Carlton Smith of San Francisco, Curtis E. Smith of Ogden, Utah, and Mrs. Melvin Sebring of San Francisco. A native of Missouri; aged 69 years."
