RANKIN FARMER DEAD AFTER SHORT ILLNESS
Robert Custer, 66, farmer of this vicinity for many years, died at 4:40 P.M., Friday in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Danville, following an illness of several days. He was born October 20, 1878 (Oct. 5, 1877), in Vermilion County, a son of Casper and Caroline Custer. One son Robert J. Custer, 12 years of age, survives. Daughter Vera Ruth preceded him in death. Funeral services were held from the Seidel Funeral Home on Monday afternoon, with the Rev. J.W. Dees officiating. Interment took place in Rankin Union Cemetery.

CARD OF THANKS
We wish to express our appreciation for the floral offerings and for the many acts of kindness of relatives, friends and neighbors. We wish also to thank Mr. Tom Mulcahey and Mr. Seidel. We are grateful to the minister for his comforting words. We thank you all. Robert Custer's wife and son Robert J.

Notes: According to a letter by a family member, the gravestone was ordered some years after Robert's death, and dates were difficult to recall; it is now apparent that the gravestone has wrong birth/death dates. His sister Mary, #2 in birth order, was born in 1871; Robert was #6 in birth order. Illinois Death Index has Robert's birth date Oct. 2, 1878 - this coordinates with his birth order, but not quite in agreement with the 1880 U.S. Federal Census dated June 3, 1880, which claims he is age 2. If born Oct. 1878, he would not have yet been 2 years at census time, so Robert's birth was likely Oct. 5, 1877, as recorded on his WW I draft registration; with this date, he would have been 2 years of age on 1880 census which asks "age at last birthday prior to June 1, 1880."

In Michigan Divorce Records, divorce was granted 19 July 1943 to Carrie Bell Custer from Robert Custer. Their marriage date had been 11 Nov 1929, in Paxton, IL.

Illinois Death Index reports 1944 as Robert's death year. Newspaper death notice states that his son Robert, Jr., (born in 1932) was 12 yrs. old, which also supports his father's 1944 death year. Robert, Sr., is buried next to his parents.
