Surname may have been anglicized from Kuster or Köster. Wife Caroline is buried beside him. On 1900 U.S. Federal Census, wife is reported to have had 12 children, of which nine lived.
Parents were Josef Anton Custer (occupation carpenter) and Marie Helena Helbling. A younger brother (one record says half-brother) Ferdinand is buried in the family plot near Casper in Rankin Union Cemetery; Ferdinand's obituary states that he was the last of a family of 12 children.
Notes:
On 1880 census, Casper's given name is mistakenly transcribed as "Cash." On enlarging the original hand-written census, his name is clearly recorded as "Casper." Some sources have an implausible birth date for his parents as "about 1825." Casper's obituary birth date is plausible. Would any descendant have accurate information on his parents' birth dates (probably before 1810)?

Obituary in the Rankin Independent 7 Apr 1916, and other public and family information:
Casper Custer was born in Jona (canton St. Gallen), Switzerland, May 10, 1833, and died April 4, 1916, in Rankin, IL, at the age of 82 years, 10 months, and 25 days. He came to this country in 1855 (departing LeHavre, France, and arriving in New York on the ship H A Miller April 20). Settling first in LaSalle County of Illinois, he moved onto his farm south of Rankin in 1863 where he spent the remainder of his life. He was married to Caroline Wirtz in 1866. To this union were born nine children: Caroline "Carrie" Haenggi of Clarence; Mary Ruedy of Chicago; Eliza "Lida" Worden of Alma, MI; Casper Custer, Jr., of Olivet, MI; August Custer of Springport, MI; Robert, Rudolf, and Albert Custer of Rankin; and, Nellie Kappler of Mt. Pleasant, MI. In addition to his wife and children, he is also survived by a brother Ferdinand Custer.
