" Found Dead In Bed"
Wednesday morning, Mrs. Casper Custer, an aged lady and long a resident of this community, was found dead in bed at her home southwest of Rankin. The nature of the death necessitated the holding of an inquest, and Deputy Coroner C.S. Smith empaneled the following jury: James Varner, Henry Varner, John Minglin, J.W. Ford, John Christensen, and Albert Dorman who went to the house, reviewed the remains, examined witnesses, and brought in a verdict of death caused by heart failure. Funeral services will be held at the Methodist Church this (Friday) afternoon at 2:30 o'clock.

from Rankin Independent, June 30, 1916:

"Funeral of Mrs. Caroline Custer"
The funeral of Mrs. Caroline Custer was held at the Methodist Church here Friday afternoon with Rev. W.G. Hunter having charge of the service. In the death of Mrs. Custer, the community has lost a resident of long standing who has seen the prairie develop into thriving villages, and the intervening spaces dotted with innumerable dwellings which point to the ways of civilization. As the prairies have given way to the early settlers, so must the older generation give way to the younger ones, as is being done in this locality at a rapid rate. The following obituary was read:
Mrs. Caroline Custer was born in the village of Othmarsingen, district Lenzburg, canton Aargau, Switzerland, Sept. 22, 1844, and died June 21, 1916. She came to this country in 1865; in 1866, she was married to Casper Custer, who died April 4, 1916. She was the mother of nine children: Caroline "Carrie" Haenggi of Clarence, IL; Mary Ruedy of Chicago; Eliza "Lida" Worden of Alma, MI; Casper, Jr., of Olivet, MI; August of Springport, MI; Robert, Rudolph, and Albert of this city; and, Nellie Kappler of Mt. Pleasant, MI. Interment was held at Rankin's Union Cemetery.
