Mary Clarice Ballard Mattingly, 80, Bardstown, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009, at the Village of Lebanon Senior Living Home, Lebanon. She was born Jan. 6, 1929, in Holy Cross. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Parish. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Jessie Grant Ballard; six brothers, Estill Ballard, Marcie Ballard, T.M. Ballard, Carmen Ballard, F.L. Ballard and Junie Ballard; and three sisters: Irene McIntyre, Annie Riggs and Lenore "Toots" Harrell. Survivors include her husband, J.M. Mattingly, Bardstown; two sons, James L. Mattingly, Fern Creek, and Leroy Mattingly, Bardstown; two daughters, Cathy Armstrong, Crossville, Tenn., and Linda Mattingly-Nalley, Bardstown; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Charles Grant Ballard, Detroit, Mearl Ballard and Walter Ballard, both of Louisville; and a sister, Pearl Downs, Bardstown; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian burial will be 1 p.m. Friday at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery. The Rev. Bill Hammer will officiate. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Thursday at Mann and Greenwell Funeral Home with an evening prayer service. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to St. Gregory Wonder Worker Fund. Mann and Greenwell Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
