Catherine Pearl Ballard Downs, 78, of Bardstown, died Thursday, October 8, 2009 at Flaget Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Downs was born December 3, 1930 in Holy Cross to Joseph Clarence and Mary Jessie Grant Ballard. She was a lifelong homemaker and retired from Bethlehem High School as a cook in the lunchroom. She was a member of St. Joseph Parish where she was active in the Bereavement Committee and the Eucharistic Adoration. Preceded in death by: Her parents; 3 grandchildren: Patricia Ann Thompson, Jason Thompson and Derek Downs; 7 brothers: Ullys Ballard, Estell Ballard, Marcie Ballard, T.M. Ballard, Carman Ballard, F.L. Ballard and Junie Ballard; and 4 sisters: Irene McIntyre, Annie Riggs, Lenore Harrell and Clarice Mattingly. Survived By: Her husband: Frank Downs of Bardstown; 4 sons: Francis Downs, Dennis Downs, and Jeff Downs, all of Bardstown, and Doug Downs of Avon, FL; 3 daughters: Joan Thompson, Phyllis Spalding and Jennifer Oakley, all of Bardstown; 18 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; 3 brothers: Grant Ballard of Sterling Heights, MI, Mearl Ballard and Walter Ballard, both of Louisville and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, October 12, 2009 at 11:00 am at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral with Celebrant Reverend Troy Overton. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday, October 11, 2009 from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Mann and Greenwell Funeral Home. Prayer Service: will be held Sunday at 3:00 pm at the funeral home by Reverend Bill Hammer.
