DOUGLAS ROBERT BLAINE, DVM SEPT 3, 1943 - OCT 26, 2009 Douglas Robert Blaine was born in Turlock, CA on Sept. 3, 1943, the second of three sons born to Hilmar and Louise Bailey Blaine. Doug grew up on the family dairy farm, attending Ballico Elementary School and Livingston High School. He played football and baseball at LHS and graduated in 1961. Doug enrolled at U.C. Davis in the fall of 1961, he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, and successfully completed his course of studies at the School of Veterinary Medicine. Upon graduation he was commissioned a captain in the U.S. Air Force, serving first at Suffolk County AFB on Long Island, NY, and then a year of deployment to Vietnam. While in Vietnam, Doug was responsible for the care of a large number of sentry dogs and also worked with the animals of Vietnamese farmers in the government's rural pacification program. Doug began his small animal practice upon his return from Southeast Asia, for many years in a partnership in a clinic in Petaluma and finally in a one man practice in Bridgeport, Mono County, which he continued until earlier this year. He was a gifted Veterinarian who cared deeply about his patients and their owners. Doug and his wife, Patti, loved the Sierras and traveling. They made many backpacking trips into the high country and in later years let their two Llamas do the heavy lifting. They enjoyed traveling with their fifth wheel trailer and several years ago made a three month trip to and from Europe by freighter, visiting Belgium, Ireland, Scotland, England, and the Netherlands. Doug passed away on Oct. 26 in Reno, Nevada, after a short illness. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, David Blaine. He is survived by his loving wife, Patti Brady of Bridgeport; his daughter, Anna Blaine of Brooklyn, NY; his stepdaughter, Heather Clark (David) of Redwood Valley, CA; his brothers, Gordon Blaine (Margaret) of Modesto, and Stanley Blaine (Clare) of Monmouth Junction, NJ; two grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A memorial service will be held at a later date. www.modbee.com/obituaries
