From The Modesto Bee, April 2001: Dairyman, educator Blaine, 90 - After many years as a Ballico farmer, he began a career as a teacher in Atwater.

Clarence "Hilmar" Blaine, a Ballico-area farmer and agribusiness leader who later became a schoolteacher in Atwater, died Saturday at Evergreen Rehabilitation Care Center in Modesto. He was 90.

Mr. Blaine started farming in the Ballico area in 1942. He grew a variety of crops, but primarily was a dairyman.

He sold his farming interests in 1964, moved to Livingston, and enrolled at California State University, Stanislaus. He earned his teaching and special education credentials and taught in the Atwater Elementary School District until is retirement in 1976.

His farming career began in the Japanese community of Coretz, southeast of Turlock. Previously, he was a deliveryman for Shell Oil Co. in the Turlock area.

"He was a real good friend with all the Japanese community of Cortez," said Mr. Blaine's son Gordon Blaine of Modesto. "He actually managed their baseball team before the war."

"One of the farmers asked him, "If I have to leave (because of the internment of the Japanese), will you run my farm?' Sure enough, it happened, and he ran that man's farm for him throughout the war."

Mr. Blaine then purchased a dairy in the Ballico area. "It was 400 acres, and at the time it was a pretty good size dairy," his son said. "I think we milked 300 cows."

He founded Blaine's Willow Lake Dairy in 1961 and distributed milk to homes and stores. Later, he was a founding partner in Markley's College Dairy in Turlock.

He had served as president of the board of directors of the Milk Producers Association of Central California, and he was a longtime member of the board of directors of the American Dairy Association of California. He also belonged to the Cortez Growers Association.

Mr. Blaine had served on the board of trustees of the Ballico Elementary School District. He was a founding member of the Delhi-Ballico Lions Club.

He was born March 5, 1911, in Nickerson, Kan. He moved to Delhi in 1926 and attended Livingston High School, where he lettered in football, basketball, baseball and track.

Later, he played football and baseball at Modesto Junior College and football at the University of California at Berkeley.

"He was actually a second-string center at Berkeley," Blaine said about his father. "He probably would have played a lot his senior year, but it was the Depression and he dropped out and got a job and got married.

Blaine said his father had a lifelong love of all kinds of sports. In addition to athletics, he was an avid hunter and fisherman.

"He shot his last buck in Colorado at age 83," Blaine said. "He couldn't hike, but he stayed by the truck and the buck came to him."

Besides his son Gordon, Mr. Blaine is survived by his sons Douglas Blaine of Bridgeport and Stanley Blaine of Monmouth Junction, N.J.; brother Russel Blaine of Murphys; sister, Orva Brittain of Walnut Creek; and seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be a 2 p.m. Saturday at Allen Mortuary in Turlock. Private burial. No visitation.

Hilmar was a gas delivery driver for Shell Oil when he met Margaret Louise Bailey at her dad's gas station on the north east corner of El Capitan Way and the old Highway 99 in Delhi, Merced County, California. They married on August 13, 1933, in Delhi.

In early 1946 Hilmar bought a ranch on Newport Road, north of Ballico in Merced County and across the road from the Turlock Munincipal Airport. In 1946, after his brother Russell returned from World War II, the two of them formed a partnership called The Blaine Brothers and did excavation work. That ended in 1951 when Russell bought his own farm. Later he established a milk delivery operation known as Willow Lake Dairy.
