Obituary from Merced Sun-Star, 1/29/2006:

Russell Glenn Blaine

January 4, 1918 - January 26, 2006

Blaine, Russell Glenn, 88, of Lancaster, California, died January 26, 2006. Russ was the last surviving child of the six children of Claude Lee Blaine and Pearl Zina (Stone) Blaine. He was born on January 4, 1918, in Elkhart, Kansas, and the family moved as farmers to Delhi, California, in 1926. Russ attended Delhi Elementary School, Modesto High School, and graduated from Berkeley High School in 1936. He was inducted into the Army on February 3, 1941, thinking that he was going to serve two years. World War II changed that and he served the country in France with the 74th Field Artillery Battalion, C Battery. Russ was discharged from military service on October 18, 1945 and used the GI bill to earn his private pilot's license.

Russ married nurse Ruby Jean Kern on July 10, 1947, in Carson City, Nevada. In February 1951, Russ and Ruby bought a farm on 1st Avenue North (now North Avenue) east of Delhi, California. He farmed peaches, grapes, and almonds on 65 acres until retiring in 1979 to a beautiful home on 2 1/2 acres in Arnold, California. As the workload and snow became an issue in Arnold, they moved to Murphys, California in 1994. Then dementia and Alzheimer's began to take its toll on Russ and they moved to Lancaster in 2003 to be near family. Russ and Ruby loved fishing and motorhoming and for ten years beginning in 1979 they would spend the summers on the California coast at Trinidad fishing for salmon.

Russ was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Harold Roy Blaine (1912-1927), Keith Elvin Blaine (1915-1998), Clarence Hilmar Blaine (1911-2001), and his sisters Lucille Tyler (1913-1967) and Orva Brittain (1922-2002). He is survived in Lancaster by his wife of 58 years, Ruby, son Theodore Allen Blaine (Debra), granddaughter Bonnie Ann Blaine (Fiance Orvil Martin Johnson), and great-grandchildren Lance Carl Martinez and Tyler Monroe Johnson. Russ is also survived in Clear Lake, Iowa, by son Laurence Paul Blaine (Dawn) and grandchildren Jessie, Charles, Natalie Dawn, and Daniel Laurence Blaine.

At Russ's request no services will be held.
