Henrietta (Pinkerton) Payton was the daugther of Wallace Garrick and Eva Ann (Garber) Pinkerton (1830-1914). Her parents were not married, so she was given the last name of her mother.

Henrietta was the youngest child in her family and had the following older half-siblings from her mother's marriage to James Wyrick Pinkerton:

Louisa M. Pinkerton 1850 – 1912
Mary Ann "Mollie" Pinkerton 1854 – 1898
Rebecca Pinkerton 1856 – 1889
George Washington Pinkerton 1858 – 1941
Sarah Jane (Pinkerton) Bennett 1861 – 1932
David Pinkerton 1862 – 1869
James H. Pinkerton 1867 – 1904

James Wyrick Pinkerton and Wallace Garrick were friends, and when James was hospitalized for pneumonia in 1869, he asked Wallace to look after his wife and children. James did not recover from his illness and died in the hospital. Henrietta was born a few months later.

On December 27, 1891, Henrietta married Ambrose Payton, a widower 12 years older than her who had a 2-year-old son:

Jesse Dee Payton 1889-

Henrietta and Ambrose had 3 children of their own:

Onia E. Payton 1892-
Amy P. Payton 1895-
Dorothy Payton 1908-

Sometime after 1920, Henrietta was admitted to Missouri State Mental Hospital #2 in St. Joseph, Missouri, suffering from pellagra, a vitamin deficiency disease caused by lack of niacin, of which one of the symptoms is mental confusion. She died there at the age of 55 on December 2, 1925 and was buried at Highland Park Cemetery in Kirksville, Missouri.

Ambrose Payton remarried 9 months later to Margaret Ellen (Bond) Scott, a widow with 8 grown children from her marriage to Jacob Ward Scott. Margaret died in November 1937 and was buried by her previous husband Mr. Scott at New Harmony Cemetery in Schuyler County, Missouri.

Three months later, on February 7,1938, Ambrose married Ida Willis who was 11 years younger. Three days later, Ambrose was run over by a car while crossing Highway 63. He was buried at Highland Park beside Henrietta.
