Mrs. Colvin, Pioneer, Dies
Death took a true pioneer of this locality when Mrs. W. B. Colvin answered the final summons at her home in Marshland on Saturday, November 10.
Mrs. Colvin's passing in the family home ended a residence in the same house of 68 years.
Mary Lingenfelter was born in Westport, Oregon on March 1, 1866. She was the daughter of the late Wm. E. and Mary Bryant Lingenfelter, who crossed the plains in 1852 by wagon train and first located in Washington county, near Hillsboro. Later they moved to Westport where Mary was born and when she was six months of age the family settled in Marshland on what is now known as the W. W. Nelson place and recently purchased by Bert Austin and Ken Noll. The family was among the first settlers in the Marshland area.
In 1881 on April 2, Mary was united in marriage to Walter B. Colvin, who also was a member of an old pioneer family, in the Lingenfelter home by Rev. Mr Wood of Wood's Landing. They made their first home at the present Magruder place, later moving to the Favorite place and in 1883 went to the present homesite when they purchased a part of the donation land claim of her grandfather Bryant and where the family has resided continuously. Mr. Colvin preceded his wife in death in 1947 ending their 66 years of marriage. Fifteen children were born to the Colvins, 12 of whom are living.
The Colvins took an active part in the development and advancement of this community. Mrs. Colvin was alway a kind and helpful neighbor and friend. She had been a member of LaFrance Rebekah lodge for over 45 years and a past noble grand of that organization. She was also an honorary member of the Marshland Women's club.
In April of 1940 a large reunion of friends and relatives honored the late Mr. and Mrs Colvin on their 59th wedding anniversary at their home.
Children surviving are Susie Graham, Garibaldi; Mildred Nicholson, Toledo; Electa Miller, Seaside; Maude and Lena, Marshland; Edith, Salem; Elmer, Harold and Evans, Marshland; Fred, Deer Island; Howard, Vernonia and Archie of Clatskanie. Eleven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren also survive as well as a large number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Anderson Funeral Home chapel on Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. with Rev. Dick Morgan officiating. Soloist was Marilyn Gustafson and musician, Ieleen Graves.
Tracy Lyons, Edwin Kleger, William Armstrong, Hugo Hanhi, Ralph Kleger and Harold Jones were pallbearers.
Committal was in Maplewood cemetery. Graveside services were under the auspices of the LaFrance Rebekah lodge.
