Walter Benjamin Colvin, 87, pioneer Columbia county logger, died November 28 at his home at Marshland and funeral services were Monday in the Clatskanie Presbyterian church. Graveside rites at the Maplewood cemetery were in charge of the Clatskanie IOOF lodge of which organization Mr. Colvin had been a member since 1883.
Born September 17, 1860, in Queen City, Ia., Mr. Colvin came to Oregon as a young man and with his brother Henry, was active in the logging industry in the then heavily-timbered Columbia county.
Surviving are his widow Mary L.; six sons, Fred of Deer Island; Elmer, Howard and Archie of Clatskanie, and Evans and Harold of Marshland; six daughters, Mrs. Susie Graham, Mrs. Lena Manary and Miss Maude Colvin of Garibaldi; Mrs. Edith Ward of Salem; Mrs. Millie Nicholson of Toledo, and Mrs. Electa Miller of Portland, as well as 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
W. B. Colvin was a public spirited man and served his community well. He for many years was on the Marshland school board and likewise on the election board. He joined the Odd Fellows Lodge in 1902 and was a charter member of Clatskanie Lodge No. 160. He was Past Grand of the Order and in the first years of his membership he walked the distance and return trip of 10 miles, using lantern light to see his way in all kinds of weather. For a long period of time, he was called on to give the Third Degree of the Lodge and was affectionately called by his fellow members, "The Father of the Third Degree."
