Katharina Kasper, daughter of Johann Jakob Kasper and Maria Vogel, was born 23 April 1838 in Legelshurst, Baden, Germany. She was baptized 24 April 1838 at the Evangelsiche Kirche in Legelshurst. She married Jakob Krieg 20 April 1856 in Legelshurst.

Katharina, with husband Jakob Krieg and children, immigrated to America on the steamship, "W.A. Scholten", arriving in New York 16 April 1881. She was most upset when she had to exchange her German marks for dollars. The Indiana Herald of Wednesday, 20 April 1881 had the following news item "Thirteen German emigrants, direct from the Faderland, headed by a brother of Trustee George L. Krieg of Lancaster township, arrived in this city on last Monday evening. They were neatly dressed and apparenty [sic] an intelligent crowd of people. They will make good citizens."

Katharina was called "Dutch Grandma" by some of her great-grandchildren. She was a member of the German Reformed Church in Huntington. At family gatherings the children in the family would speak English and Dutch Grandma would say "What speak no German?" All her life Katharina read "nickel novels" in German.

Katharina (Kasper) Krieg died of cardiac arrhythmia 22 August 1916, Lancaster Township, Huntington County, Indiana at age 78 years. She was buried from the H. Frank Bailey Funeral Home where her funeral cost $186.73. Her body was interred at Lancaster Cemetery, Lancaster Township, Huntington County, Indiana. For some reason her name on her tombstone is spelled "Kothorine".
