We know very little about Elizabeth Monticue Best Bolam. She was born to Nathaniel Monticue and Elizabeth Boon Monticue, both of whom were born in Caroline County, MD, and married there in 1809.

Elizabeth was the oldest daughter who survived in a family of ten children, two of whom died early. She was born around 1816. Her year of birth is from early census records of her family.
She was:
Between 0-10 of age in 1820 in Somerset twp, Somerset Co. PA (by my estimate: 4)
Between 10-15 in 1830 in Donegal twp., Westmoreland Co. PA (by my estimate 14)
Married in 1835 in Donegal (by my estimate: 19)
Between 20-30 in 1840, Donegal twp., Westmoreland Co. PA (by my estimate: 24)
34 in 1850 in Darlington twp., Beaver Co. PA (by my estimate: 34)
49 in 1860 in Darlington twp., Beaver Co. PA (by my estimate: 44)
52 in 1870 in Darlington Twp., Beaver Co. PA (by my estimate: 54)
(At age 52 remarried in 1870 to George Bolum (he is 35))
age 65 in 1880 in Chippewa Twp., Beaver Co. PA (by my estimate: 64)(George is 45)

Elizabeth married May 22, 1835 to John Best of Donegal, Westmoreland, PA. The couple moved to Darlington, Beaver County, PA before the 1850 census where John worked as a laborer in the coal mines.

The couple had nine children: Mary (born around 1836), William C. born around 1838 who died of disease in the Civil War in Virginia, Elizabeth, born May 11, 1840, Robert Charles born 12 Jun 1843, Susan born 1845, Hannah born 11 Feb 1848, James Martin born 1 Jul 1851, Amelia Ann born 8 Dec 1854 and David M. (1855-1860).

John, Elizabeth's husband, took the family to a send-off for soldiers volunteering to fight in the Civil War in Sept 1861, spontaneously jumped on the train to join them, without telling his family. John died after about a year, in Washington DC, of a musket wound to the shoulder and was buried in Washington DC.

Elizabeth operated a boarding house in Darlington, PA to support herself and her children. There she met another coalminer from England, George Bolam, a widower with children, and married him about 1870. She was about 54 and George Bolam was about 45 when they married. He died before her. She lived with her daughter, Amelia Clayton, at the time of her death and was buried in the Clayton plot of Grove Cemetery as was her daughter, Susan, a widow.
