MRS. HANNAH LOCKARD

In the death of Mrs. Hannah Lockard, the town of Nelson loses one of its
venerable and respected residents who for many years has won the affection of
the community.
Hannah Best was born in West Moran (Westmoreland) County, PA, Feb 11, 1848 and
when a young girl moved with her parents to Syracuse (Darlington), PA. Her
father and a brother were killed in the army in the Civil War. She was married
to William D. Lockard, Nov. 20, 1867 and together they came to Wisconsin the
following year. They settled on a farm in the town of Nelson and lived in this
vicinity ever since. In 1917 they moved to Misha Mokwa. They had the pleasure of
celebrating their Golden Wedding three years ago. Six children were born to this
union, Mrs. Jane Moore of Eau Claire, Drusilla, now Mrs. Ed Aitken of Misha
Mokwa, Permilla, now Mrs. Ed Hess of Nelson, Emma, now Mrs. Louis Wiegele of
Nelson, and Edward and Flora, deceased. They had also, 31 grandchildren, 36
great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Lockard leaves in the hearts of all the members of her family and of her
many friends the memory of a woman who did her full duty as a kind and
sacrificing mother, a sympathetic and helpful neighbor and a faithful member of
her church. One of the incidents in her life worthy of mention was the leading
part she took many years ago on the occasion of the moving of the Beef Slough
church, donated by Thomas Irvine to its present location in Nelson, when she
acted as host in the celebration of the event.
Mrs. Lockard died of an attack of summer flu, complicated by the ailments of old
age, having been an invalid for a number of years. Death came in the presence of
all her children, October 16. Funeral services were held Sunday October 19 at
the home and at Nelson Methodist Church, Rev. Grandy of Durand preaching the
final sermon. The Ladies Aid, of which the deceased had for many years been an
active worker, took part in the services.
Those from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mrs. N. Wesley of Madison,
Mrs. J.L. Wiegele and Mrs. E.B. Thompson of Minneapolis and Mrs. & Mrs. Frank
Barto, Mr. and Mrs. Andy dahl , Mr. & Mrs. Alva Patton, Mr. & Mrs. Herman Alitz
and Arthur Moore of Eau Claire.
