Susan was the child of John and Elizabeth (Monticue) Best. Susan was with her family of origin on the 1860 census and then again on the 1870 census and 1880 census but in the last two, her name was Susan Sutherland. She probably married shortly after 1860, maybe to a soldier. There was an 18 year old William H. Sutherland, a farmer from Beaver who mustered into the army Nov 9, 1861 and was captured 4-20-1864 at Plymouth NC and was paroled 12-13-64. Susan's niece, Permilla, also told me that Susan had died away from home and been shipped back by train in a coffin but that no one really believed it was her body--no information as to why they felt this way. Susan was with her family of origin in every census. I wonder if the body shipped back was that of Susan's husband, Mr. Sutherland?

Then, another mystery, on her tombstone her name is Sutherin rather than Sutherland as it was on the census records.

Family information from her brother, David's side, is that Susan had two babies who were both born dead so she must have been married about 5 years.
