GURWELL - Alta Whittlesey, second daughter of W. W. and Cassandra Whittlesey, was born November 13, 1884, in Russell, Iowa and departed this life April 26, 1969 at the age of 84 years, seven months at the Riverview Manor in Des Moines.

She grew to young womanhood at Russell, attending school at LaGrange. She was united in marriage to George W. Gurwell in 1903. To this union was born four sons and two daughters. Mrs. Gurwell devoted her life to her fullest capacity to the teachings of her God and her beliefs.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, and her husband. Mrs. Gurwell is survived by a sister, Edith W. Smith of Des Moines; four sons, Floyd of Topeka, Kan.; Earl of Chariton; Clair of Taft, Calif.; and Howard of Chariton, two daughters, Elizabeth and Dorothy, both of Des Moines; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. She was a loving mother and will be sadly missed.

Funeral services were conducted by Elder W. L. Chandler at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 29, 1969 at the Beardsley-Fielding Funeral Home. Interment was in the Russell Cemetery.
