SMITH

Edith Whittlesey Smith was born in Washington Township, near Russell, Lucas County, Ia., July 23, 1880 and passed away at the Ramsey Memorial Home in Des Moines, Ia., April 21, 1977.

Edith, the eldest daughter of William W. Whittlesey and Nancy Cassandra Shepherd, was born on a farm southeast of Russell, where she spent her early years with her family of four sisters, who all attended the Mound rural school. Later she sttended a girl's school, away from home, returning to teach rural schools in Lucas County. Always having a strong Christian faith, she joined the Christian Church in Russell, very early in life.

In 1911, she moved to California and married John Nelson Smith, August 16, 1916, at Los Angeles, Calif. Mr. Smith was active in the formation of the Christian Church from Ohio to California and Edith continued to keep busy with the function of the church in Los Angeles with her husband. Mr. Smith preceded her in death August 7, 1923, after a very short married life.

Shortly after his death, she returned to live with her parents on a farm northeast of Russell. Later, she and her mother, after her father's death, moved into Russell and later to Chariton, Ia., where she made her home until 1963, when she moved to the Ramsey Memorial Home in Des Moines.

She was a long time member of the Chariton Christian Church, always active and faithful in attendance at all functions. For many years she was active in the Chariton Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution until 1963.

Edith was also preceded in death by her parents, her four sisters, Mrs. Minnie Whittlesey, Mrs. Alta Gurwell, Mrs. Elvina Thompson and Mrs. Pearl Slater. She is survived by many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews, who in her later years, have been a most important part of her retired life.

Always self supporting, with a strong faith of will and mind, she will be remembered by many relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 25, at the Fielding Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dan Haggard officiating. Interment was in the Russell Cemetery.
