WM. W. WHITTLESEY
Wm. W. Whittlesey, son of Joel and Nancy Cunningham Whittlesey, was born on March 7, 1846, in Vermont, and passed away Feb. 10, 1931, at his home near Russell, Iowa, aged 84 years, 11 months and 3 days.
When but a small child he moved with his parents to Illinois.
On March 3, 1869, he was united in marriage to Fannie C. Daugherty and to this union one son was born, who died in infancy. His wife passed away on April 11, 1872. He was married to Alice C. Head on October 6, 1873, and the following year they came to Iowa, where they settled on a farm in Washington township. To this union was born a daughter, Mrs. Minnie Whittlesey, now deceased. He was again bereft of his companion in February, 1876.
He was married on March 27, 1879 to Cassie Shepherd and to this union were born four daughters, Mrs. Edith Smith, Mrs. Alta Gurwell, Mrs. Elvina Thompson (deceased), and Mrs. Pearl Slater.
In 1900, the family moved to a farm in Cedar township where he lived until death claimed him.
Besides his wife and three daughters, he leaves to mourn their loss, sixteen grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. W. A. Elliott, and two brothers, G. M. Whittlesey, of Des Moines and J. H. Whittlesey.
During the early years of his residence near Russell, Mr. Whittlesey united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church at LaGrange. He was a man of industrious habits and good character, a splendid friend and neighbor and will be missed in the home circle and in the community.
Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Archie Beals, were held at the Baptist church in Russell, followed by interment in the Russell cemetery.
