"Water Works Head Dies; Was Veteran Employee of City

Albert Wiegand, 69, superintendent of the Port Huron water works four years, died today in his home, 2012 Seventh Street, after an illness of several months.

Mr. Wiegand began his employment at the water works as a janitor, Nov 8, 1909. Six weeks later he was promoted to fireman, a job he held nine hears. He was assistant engineer two years and engineer nine years.

He was chief engineer three years and was appointed superintendent by the city commission in April, 1933.

'The loss of Mr. Wiegand is deeply felt by the department,' Charles D Rettie, commissioner of public works, said today. 'He was an efficient superintendent and highly respected by myself and all the members of the department. His efficiency is reflected in the fact that men he has trained will be able to carry on the duties of the water works system. His place will be filled by promotion.'

Mr. Wiegand was born Jan 11, 1868 in Westfalen, near Essen, Germany. When he was 11 years old, he and four brothers were brought to Port Huron from Germany by their mother. He has lived in Port Huron since 1879.

He is survived by five sons, Albert Wiegand, Port Huron; Earl Wiegand, Plymouth, Mich., Russell Wiegand, Jackson, and Herbert and Arlington Wiegand, both of Detroit; two brothers, Harry and Otto Wiegand, both of Detroit, and six grandchildren.

The remains are in the Albert Falk funeral residence and will be removed sunday afternoon to the family home, where funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday. Rev E. J. Soell, pastor of St. John's Evangelical church will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeside cemetery."
