Vinton Hale was born Sept. 10, 1823, son of John & Sarah Barton Hale. He married Elizabeth Smith Aug. 13, 1844 in Gallia Co. Ohio. They were the parents of 11 children: Elva, Marquis, Solomon, Sarah, John Riley, George, William, Marshall, Peter Frank, Martha, & Nathan Harvey. They also raised 2 granddaughters Jessie & Mary Viola Gee after the death of their daughter Elva(Alva) Gee.
Vinton & Elizabeth moved to Wapello Co. Iowa in the mid 1840's with all the Hale family. After a few years the family moved to Knox Co. where Elizabeth had family. They settled just south of Herman. Vinton helped build the Methodist Church, & is buried in its cemetery.
