Martha Jane Hale Gilliam was born in May 1864 in Knox Co. Illinois, daughter of Vinton & Elizabeth Smith Hale. She worked for the town doctor in Hermon, Illinois as an office manager & caretaker for his invalid wife. After they had a son, Cecil Hale, it was decided Martha would be happier elsewhere. An ad for a mail order bride was put in a western newspaper. The only reply came from Albert Taylor Gilliam, a widower, in Oregon. Martha traveled to Oregon & they were married. They had 2 daughters, Esther & Ida. Martha died July 22, 1929.
