ANDREW J. YERTY

Andrew J. Yerty was born in Miami County, Ohio, near Covington, November 26, 1844, and departed this life at his home in Russell, Iowa, Thursday evening, September 18 at 9:30, following an affliction of which he had been a sufferer for several years. He was 78 years, 9 months and 6 days of age. Had he lived until November 26 of this year he would have been 80 years old.

Mr. Yerty spent his boyhood days in Ohio, enlisting at the age of 17 in the Army of the Civil War, serving two years, 1864 and 1865 in Co. E of the 147th Ohio regiment. After the war he went to Illinois and was married to Harriet Isabelle Morrow of Ipava, Illinois, January 4, 1865. They resided in Illinois for 12 years, coming west overland in a covered wagon in the fall of 1877 locating on a farm near the present site of LaGrange, Lucas County, Iowa, and they have been continuous residents of the county since, a period of 47 years.

To this union nine children were born; two preceding their father in death, Alice, who died at the age of 17 at LaGrange many years ago and Mrs. Grace Adcock, who died during the flu epidemic November 3, 1918. The living children are Aaron W. Yerty of Cassa, Montana (should be Wyoming); Faye Miller of Russell, Iowa; Mrs. W. S. Hays of Scottsbluff, Nebraska; Mrs. H. H. Crane of St. Joseph, Missouri; Mrs. R. C. Mallory of Red Oak, Iowa; and Mrs. Rena Baughman of Russell, Iowa; who with his widow, Mrs. Harriet Yerty; thirty grandchildren and four great-grandchildren are left to mourn his loss. In January 1912 he moved from LaGrange to Russell where they lived until his death.

Mr. Yerty was a Christian man and devoted more of his time during his life to the work of the Master than the average man of his day. He with his wife were baptized into Christ and became members of the Christian Church in Illinois prior to their coming to Iowa. During their residence in LaGrange owing to church change in that location, he was affliated with the Christian, Presbyterian and Evangelical churches that were active in their days of years ago. In late years he was affiliated with the Russell Christian Church who with the late John C. Dixon were honorary Elders of that congregation. Mr. Yerty was an active and studious Bible School teacher for over thirty years, a duty which he enjoyed and was always faithful and punctuous in that work, and it was sadness to him and a great deal of worry that he was forced a few years ago to give up active work in the church and Sunday School because of his afflictions which affected his hearing.

Mr. Yerty's father died when he was a small child and his mother later on remarried. He was the only surviving member of the family. His mother, one brother, four half-brothers and two half-sisters preceding him to the world beyond.

Husband of Harriet Isabelle Morrow. Son of Jacob Yerty and Esther Wise.
