After Strenuous Life of Pioneering
and Fighting Indians
Funeral services over the remains of J. A. Ross, familiarly known as "Uncle" Andrew Ross, were held at Joseph last Sunday afternoon, under the direction of Bishop Arnfred Christensen. Beautiful music was furnished by a quartette from Monroe and one from Joseph, while Mrs. J. M. Peterson of Richfield and Miss Owens of Joseph sang solos.
The floral offerings were most beautiful and bespoke the high regard in which decedent was held, and the host of friends who mourn his demise.
The speakers were Bishop J. F. Parker who was the presiding ecclesiast during the major portion of the time decedent lived inn Joseph, and he paid high tribute to his memory. The other speakers were Pres. W. H. Seegmiller, Judge H. N. Hayes, Judge J. H. Erickson, Jos. S. Horne, Pres. R. D. Young and Bishop Christensen. All these men had known decedent intimately, and all bore testimony to his worth as a citizen and as a church and community worker.

He moved with his folks to Nauvoo, and participated in the hardships of crossing the plains. He spent his young manhood in assisting emigrant trains across the prairies and was one of the relief expedition sent out to bring in the remnant of the hand cart company that suffered from exposure and cold in December, 1856 to such an extent that more than half the company died before relief came. He was a veteran of the Indian wars having served in the Walker war of 1853-54; the Tintic war of 1854-55; the Black Hawk war of 1865-67. He also helped in building the Union Pacific road through Echo Canyon in 1868.
He served as a missionary in 1876-77 and also in 1883-84. He was president and director of the Sevier Valley Canal company and the Otter Creek Reservoir company, and vice president of the Richfield Commercial & Savings Bank.
He was married to Sarah Ann Smith at Salt Lake City on March 6, 1857 and this wife died a number of years later at Kanosh. He was married to Catherine E. Anderson on May 25, 1879.
He is survived by his sisters Margaret A. Carter, Nancy J. McMullin, Matilda Height, and his brothers, T. W. Ross, Lewis Ross and Daniel Ross.
In accordance with a request of decedent the remains were taken to Kanosh last Monday and laid to rest beside his first wife.
