Coroner's Jury Renders Verdict

A tragic accident occurred yesterday afternoon shortly after 12 o'clock at the stone quarry, operated by Wayne Steel of Huntingdon, located one mile south of Saltillo. Isaac Park, of Knightsville was instantly killed; Emory McQuait, of Clear Ridge, was seriously injured; and Walter McConnaughey of Saltillo, suffered painful injuries when they were caught by a premature explosion of dynamite. The three men had been making arrangements preparatory to setting off a blast and during the tamping of the dynamite into the drilled hole in the bed of each, an explosion occurred. Just what caused the explosion is not known.
Parks' body was badly mutilated and McQuait, who is 29 years old, was seriously injured about the head and face. He was rushed to the J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital at Huntingdon, where his injuries were give surgical attention. His condition today is reported 'just fair." He apparently is suffering much from the shock, and surgeons are unable to determine the extent of his injuries.
Walter McConnaughey was struck on the head and body by flying rock, but was given surgical attention by a local physician and taken to his home. His injuries are not a serious nature.
Coroner F. L. Schum, of Huntingdon, conducted an inquest at the stone quarry yesterday afternoon about 4:30 o'clock. The jury consisted of Lewis Garlock, W. F. Green, David Powell, Gordon Raker, Herbert Shope, and Charles W. Smouse. Testimony of other quarry men were heard but this testimony could not fix the manner in which the accident occurred. The jury rendered a verdict of "purely accidental."
Isaac Franklin Park is a son of J. Bland Park, deceased, and Annie (Stake) Park of Saltillo. He was born August 7, 1897, hence, at the time of his death was aged 33 years and 2 months. He was united in marriage to Miss Erma Bell Monihen, R.D. Mapleton, on October 5, 1918, by Rev. George W. Frownelter of Three Springs. His death occurred on his 12th wedding anniversary.
